ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician - Grade I Certification
Note: The Concrete Field Testing Technician Certification - Grade I exam is sponsored by the Virginia Ready-Mixed Concrete Association (VRMCA). This is a third-party certification not affiliated with the ACI Virginia Chapter.
About the Certification
A Concrete Field Testing Technician—Grade I is an individual who has demonstrated the knowledge and ability to correctly perform and record the results of seven fundamental field tests on freshly mixed concrete.
Scope & Knowledge
This program requires a working knowledge of the following ASTM test methods and practices:
- C1064/C1064M – Temperature of Freshly Mixed Hydraulic-Cement Concrete
- C172/C172M – Sampling Freshly Mixed Concrete
- C143/C143M – Slump of Hydraulic-Cement Concrete
- C138/C138M – Density (Unit Weight), Yield, and Air Content (Gravimetric) of Concrete
- C231/C231M – Air Content of Freshly Mixed Concrete by the Pressure Method
- C173/C173M – Air Content of Freshly Mixed Concrete by the Volumetric Method
- C31/C31M – Making and Curing Concrete Test Specimens in the Field
The certification process includes both a knowledge-based assessment and hands-on performance evaluation based on the Job Task Analysis (JTA) for ACI Certification of Concrete Field Testing Technician—Grade I. The JTA outlines the essential knowledge and skills covered in the examination.
Certification Requirements
ACI will grant certification only to applicants who meet both of the following requirements:
- Pass the ACI written examination
- Successfully complete the ACI performance examination
Written Examination
- A closed-book exam lasting one hour.
- Consists of 55 multiple-choice questions.
- Includes 5 to 10 questions on each ASTM test method and practice.
Passing Criteria:
- Score at least 60% on each individual test method.
- Achieve an overall score of at least 70%.
Performance Examination
- A closed-book exam requiring actual demonstration of six ASTM test methods.
- Candidates must also provide a verbal description of Practice C172/C172M (Sampling).
- Examinees are assessed on their ability to correctly perform or describe each procedure.
Recertification
Certification is valid for five years. To maintain certification, candidates must successfully pass both the written and performance examinations again.
